Church reaches out to KCs growing downtown population

Guitars, drums and singers signal the start of evening worship. Women and men mingling near the hospitality center start to take their seats. Many are casually dressed; some carry cold beverages. There is no air conditioning at Grand Avenue Temple, but the heat doesn’t keep people away. Electric fans hum in the background, but, for good measure, some parishioners grab cardboard church fans from a basket by the entryway. On really hot evenings, the church gives out Popsicles.
