Coming to camp

First-time tips

Going to an overnight camp for the first time can be an exciting and anxious time. There are resources available to help both parents and campers prepare.

The American Camp Association has some advice for parents.

Bob Ditter, a Boston family therapist and national expert on camp, offers seven tips parents can share with their first-time camper in preparation for camp.

  • Respect others and you'll have friends.
  • Just try the new activities at camp. The more you put into camp, the more you'll get out of it.
  • Be patient with yourself. It takes a few days to get adjusted.
  • Help out. Camp is about fun but it also requires you to help out and cooperate with others.
  • Get help if you have a problem or need something.
  • Everyone has good and bad days. Your counselor is there to help you.
  • Remember your strengths.
